A thought by Jason Duncan | 3-4 minute read
We just recorded and released an amazing podcast with Edmonton-based pastor and comedian Dan Taylor. An episode where we made ourselves vulnerable for the sake of bettering the church. I know that many of you don’t have the time to invest in a one-and-a-half hour conversation, so I wanted to take a hot-minute and release some “Cliff Notes” of the podcast, because I think it’s discussion that the church needs to hear!
Here is the episode, if you don’t have time to listen, keep reading.
Let’s start with this bombshell statement and title: “Porn isn’t a problem in church, it’s a shitty solution.” Those are not my words, they are the words of our guest Dan Taylor, and I couldn’t agree more! You see, just as “lust” wasn’t the problem in Matthew 5, neither is porn. The real issue is, and always has been, a heart issue!
Yes, you can (and should) cut off the “hand” of porn. Toss the magazines, switch to a flip-phone, burn the movies, place your computer in a visible, high traffic area, change your password to WWJD, and find alternate routes around that billboard that gives you a boner (lady boners included). Eliminating these “temptations” is good and wise and are the words of Jesus, but the sermon on the mount doesn’t end there! It keeps going for another two chapters! What happens is we place the blame on porn, we place the focus on eliminating porn, but we forgot to deal with the heart, and that’s why “porn” in and of itself is a shitty solution!
Raise of hands, how many of you have eliminated porn after a shame-infested sermon only to have another demon arise like video games, online gambling, religion itself, sports, carbs, sugar, energy drinks, and the like?
*sheepishly raising my hand*
That’s because we eliminated the grossest thing in our closet, but we didn’t deal with the HEART. If we don’t deal with the heart, the problem doesn’t go away, it manifest into a different beast, it shrouds itself in shame, and eventually, returns worse than before! The addiction is worse, the shame spiral descents deeper, God grows distant, and we gag on the thick air in darkness of the hole we dug.
So if porn isn’t the cause of, or solution to, all of life’s problems, what is?
I hate to say it, because it’s a lot harder to digest, but the cause is your heart of stone, and the solution is God’s heart of flesh that God alone places within you (see Ezekiel 36:26). Porn and masturbation are easy solutions, they are easily available, affordable, and anonymous. (see the article and TedX Talk by Gail Dines linked below) Which in turn, means they are also easy to blame! When God alone removes that heart of stone, which cannot feel pain, from you and replaces it with a heart of flesh, all of the sudden life hurts. It hurts in a big way, you’re exposed, you’re naked, you’re vulnerable, and the tits of porn and masturbation you’ve been nursing on are no longer satisfying and fulfilling. You may then start to learn that you no longer need that milk, but solid food.
By solid food, I mean a real meaningful relationship with God.
When you stop blocking your relationship with God with worldly comfort, you begin to realize that despite your weakness, God still loves you, cherishes you, and admires you. You lament over your sin in an honest way like David did in Psalm 51, and you trust in God to satisfy your needs, including sex.
The sermon on the Mount doesn’t end in Matthew 5, it keeps going!
Matthew 6:31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ [INSERT: How shall we be sexually fulfilled?] 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
The answer to the porn problem isn’t simply the removal of porn, it’s entrusting your heart to a heavenly Father who knows the things that you need and who promises to provide for you.
I hope you find this encouraging! I hope it provides a less shameful and more palatable solution! And I hope you have time to listen to our podcast with Comedian Dan Taylor where we go much deeper on porn, marriage, masturbation, wet dreams and more!
