Can Christians Play Metal?

by Jason Duncan (2 min read)

Can Christians play metal?

Yes. Yes they can.

Is God glorified in low growling screams and breakdowns?

Yes. Yes God is.

Here’s the thing, I get it… kind of. I spent much of the early 2000’s in the underground music scene, particularly in christian circles. During that time, I played countless church basement shows across the midwest, and even had the opportunity to play some large christian music festivals. I am safely desensitized to “christian metal.” I must admit, when I first heard it, I too was a bit taken back. I mean obviously God approved our cello driven indie-rock-with-a-folk-twist, but what of these heathens with their pointy guitars straight from the pit? Surely the Holy Spirit only graced the fret-boards of semi-hollow body Gretsches and the speakers of barely crunching fender tube amps. Could the resurrection really be proclaimed through demonic sounding screams? YES.

Why? How?

Because metal isn’t christian! Neither is folk, country, rock, or blues. Neither are instruments. Inanimate objects and music genres don’t have souls and they don’t save souls either. They are simply tools and styles enjoyed by various human beings. Some of those human beings happen to love God and follow Jesus. In fact, followers of Jesus (often called Christians in today’s society) may even be used to glorify God and reach people in circles that music only using major chords on acoustic guitars can’t. To use more insider language, “we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28.

You don’t have to understand it. We don’t understand a lot of things. Some things, like using a large yellow vehicle to transport kids to your after school church program in the hopes of reaching them with the gospel, may make more sense to you than a low growl scream. Nevertheless, both can, and are, being used by God to bring God glory. Amen!

So sit back and listen to story of how Chris Herr and Brian Gorecki became best friends in grade school. They’ve been making metal for nearly 20 years and their band “Bringing Down Broadway” is back and ready to thrash! We join these childhood friends at North Tower Studio in Lapeer Michigan as they share their story and announce their return! Also… Alex is in the band, probably should include that.
